In the Shadow of the Sword: Emir Abdelkader in Damascus John Kiser and Tamar Miller completed a case study entitled “Ethical Leadership – Emir Abd el-Kader, with assistance from Ellie Pierce of the Pluralism Project at Harvard University and support from the Center for the Study of Jewish-Christian-Muslim Relations at Merrimack College and the Abdelkader Education Project. This eight-page case includes stories in historical context, ethical and religious leadership challenges, and guiding questions for teachers in high schools, colleges, graduate schools or seminaries. The case focuses on the tensions and risks associated with Abd el-Kader’s intervention in Damascus in 1860, where he saved Christian lives from angry mobs, after he fought a 17-year battle against French colonialism in Algeria. The resonances of this story for today are profound. If you would like a copy of the case and would like to think through how best to use it in a variety of settings, please email TamarMiller@thepeacebeat.org or JWK@copper.net.]]>
